From the Desk of the President

“At International Decorators, Inc., we hold our team accountable while  providing them with unparalleled care and respect. As a proud union contractor, we prioritize a safe work environment, and many of our employees can recite our safety mission statement by heart:

"Everyone goes home alive and in the same condition as they arrived; your loved ones count on it!"

Our workforce includes field workers who have grown with us over decades, from apprentices to journeymen, with some retiring after 30+ years of service. Similarly, our office personnel boast impressive tenures, with several team members building 20, 30, and even 40-year careers at IDI. This speaks volumes about our supportive and engaging work environment. We are immensely proud of our low turnover rate, which reflects our commitment to fostering a positive and fulfilling workplace.

Our office staff positions offer unique opportunities to become employee-owners by earning shares of stock, embodying our growth mindset and dedication to superior service. We became an ESOP in 2018 with 30 employee-owners and are proud to have grown to over 40 today. We stand strong in the construction industry, driven by values of humility, ethics, teamwork, and a deep sense of community. At IDI, we are not just building structures; we are building America.

If you're ready to roll up your sleeves, enjoy what you do, and be part of a team that values your dedication, then IDI is the place for you. Join us and "Build Something Worth Owning."

Our History

1952 - 1960

Crafting Excellence Since 1952

Founded in 1952 by Tony Pintozzi as "Pintz & Company Decorators," International Decorators started as a residential painting business in Chicago. In 1954, Tony relocated the operations to McHenry, IL, running the business from his basement. That same year, Chuck Pintozzi joined the company. By 1960, Chuck and Tony expanded the business into commercial painting.

1965 - 1988

Evolution and Expansion

In 1965, the company was renamed International Decorators Inc. When asked why he chose that name, Tony explained that he wanted something that sounded “really big!” In 1969, International Decorators expanded into the residential drywall business. By 1975, they began installing metal stud framing, leading to the creation of the Commercial Drywall division. The company continued to grow, and by 1978, they moved to a larger facility in McHenry to support their expanding operations. The 1980s brought diverse projects and the launch of the Acoustical Ceiling division.

1992 - 1996

Leadership Transition

In 1992, Tony and Chuck approached the next generation of ownership—Butch Pintozzi, Bill Preston, Randy Freund, and Charles Pintozzi (referred to as G2)—with the opportunity to purchase the business, offering them the choice to either maintain the status quo or pursue growth. G2 decided to purchase the company in 1996, fully aware of the significant responsibilities they were undertaking. Fortunately, Tony and Chuck had set a strong foundation, enabling G2 to continue building on the company’s legacy.

1999

Focus on Safety

In 1999, International Decorators made a significant advancement by hiring a full-time Safety Director, marking a shift from viewing safety as merely a “compliance issue” to embracing it as “a way of life.” This change was crucial, as the company's leadership recognized the need for dedicated focus on safety. As a result, IDI developed a robust safety culture, which is regarded as one of the best in the industry today.

2000

Metal Roof Truss Division

The early 2000s saw the addition of the Metal Roof Truss Division, providing engineering, layout, and installation services. The business continued to expand, moving into a new facility in Wauconda in 2008.

2008

Industrial Paint Division

Despite economic challenges, the Industrial Paint Division was launched in 2008, offering sandblasting, industrial coatings, and tank painting. The company showcased expertise and a safety-minded approach in this specialized field.

2009 - 2011

Resilience

Facing challenges post-2008, including downsizing in 2009 and the passing of Randy Freund, the company showcased resilience. In 2011, operations shifted back to the Barrington facility.

2016

3rd Generation Begins

In 2016, Butch and Bill entrusted Jim Gaszynski with the role of President, paving the way for the 3rd generation of leadership. Matt Kiefer was appointed VP of Sales in 2018, followed by Brian Haese becoming Director of Operations in 2021. Today, Jim, Matt, and Brian—collectively known as G3—oversee the day-to-day operations, strategy, and growth of the business. Jim's leadership philosophy centers on surrounding himself with smart, innovative individuals and cultivating a culture where every team member is empowered to share ideas and contribute to the company’s growth.

2018 - Current

Employee Ownership Begins

IDI made history by becoming an employee-owned company through an ESOP, transforming from family ownership to a dynamic team of over 30 employee-owners. Today, we are proud to have grown to over 40 employee-owners, ushering in a new era of growth and collaboration.

Building a Better Future: The Impact of Donating to Charities

At its core, construction is about creating something lasting and meaningful—be it a sturdy building or a thriving community. Donating to charities works in much the same way. Just as a solid foundation supports a structure, your contributions lay the groundwork for positive change and enduring impact.

When you donate, you're investing in projects that uplift communities, provide critical resources, and support essential services. Each dollar you contribute helps construct opportunities for those in need, whether it's funding education, supporting healthcare, or aiding disaster relief. Much like in construction, where every detail matters, every donation counts towards building a brighter, more resilient future.

Join us in laying the groundwork for a better world. Your generosity helps create a stronger, more connected community—one where every act of kindness helps fortify the fabric of society. Together, we can build something truly extraordinary.
